Tribune Newspapers Collaborate to Tell Stories of Sept. 11 Victims

Database and editorial content serve as lasting online memorial

CHICAGO, October 26, 2001 -- Tribune Company has launched a collaborative effort among its newspapers to tell the stories of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

"Remembering the Lost" is a searchable database and online memorial that currently lists more than 3,000 names through links to Tribune and New York area newspapers. But names are only the beginning.

"Through careful reporting and editing, Tribune newspapers are recounting powerful stories about the victims of the terrorist attacks. Our journalists are working hard to profile the victims and the lives they touched," said Howard Tyner, vice president/editorial, Tribune Publishing. "This database, and the reporting that accompanies it, forms a comprehensive online presentation that will be a valuable tool for historians, students and the general public to learn more about the impact of the tragedy."

Led by Newsday, which began profiling the victims on Sept. 12 and has continued to tell their stories, the "Remembering the Lost" database currently contains 400 profiles and 800 links to profiles from six Tribune and three metropolitan area newspapers. More than 600 of the profiles include photographs.

"This project puts faces with the names," said Beth DeCarbo, Newsday's director of database development. "These are people who had families, careers, hobbies and hopes for the future. Our mission is to create a permanent, comprehensive online memorial - a virtual legacy to all of the lives that were lost."

Newsday's database now links to all newspapers published by Tribune including the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. In addition, the database links to three other metropolitan area newspapers not owned by Tribune: the Newark Star-Ledger, Journal News of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties and Staten Island Advance.

On the Internet, go to www.newsday.com/911memorial to view the database. Users can search by name, community name and company name or browse all of the victims known to date.
